Hackberry grows primarily in river valleys and bottomlands in floodplain, lowland hardwood, and maple-basswood forests. It does best on rich, silty loam or loam soils. It is a fairly fast-growing tree with a nice, symmetrical form. It needs some sunlight, so do not plant it directly beneath larger trees.
