Chokecherry is a common shrub throughout our region. It grows on a variety of soil types. It develops into a tall shrub on rich, loam soil or in low, moist, sunny situations. On dry, sandy soil, it tends to form a shorter, bushier form. The bright berries are too bitter for people to eat fresh, but they make a delicious jelly. Chokecherry berries are an important wildlife food.
